Lode Runner (Xbox) is a classic game dating back to the 80’s where it laid emphasis on continuing action and a challenging puzzle design. After almost 25 years it proves to be as addictive as it was back then.
You are on an endless quest for gold through many levels while being pursued by a relentless parade of enemies. You can run, climb and move hand over hand through the levels but cant jump anywhere. However, a slight trick helps you along. Your blasting mechanic blasts through certain kinds of blocks if they are on your left and right and helps creating traps for your enemies. They are predictable but not stupid and are adept at cornering you. Lode Runner has a learning curve which is well explained by the excellent tutorials. This game is a challenge and you have to learn from your mistakes. The game play requires quick reflexes and fast thinking in your attempts to avoid enemies and get all the gold. The layout of each level can be used in a way, something you learn over time. There is also the Fun Puzzle mode which pits you against only the environment. These can be quite a brain teaser but with the inclusion of co-op mode, you have many more exciting competitive challenges ahead.
The visuals are clean and animation runs smooth. The background music stays detaches but the sound effects create action. With over 170 levels to play and a level editor, Lode Runner offers much appeal and is definite buy if you like intellectual challenges
